Dog and Bear Hit the Road

This article originally appeared in PW's Children's Bookshelf.

They may be just three feet tall and made of plush, but that’s not keeping Dog and Bear, the eponymous stars of Laura Vaccaro Seeger’s Dog and Bear and Dog and Bear: Two’s Company (Roaring Brook/Porter), from striking out across the U.S. on tour. The Dog and Bear Best Friends Tour got underway last week and will run through the summer.

Four sets of the custom-made plush characters (created by MerryMakers) will crisscross the country over the next few months. Three of the packages will move between 17 bookstores in 14 states that signed up to participate in the tour (via a marketing alert Roaring Brook sent out in February); a fourth box will move between public and school libraries in Texas, starting with a kick-off at the Texas Library Association’s annual conference, currently underway in Houston.

Dog and Bear’s first events were held at Bookin’ It, a mobile bookstore in Belmont, N.C., and the Learnéd Owl Book Shop in Hudson, Ohio. The figures in the third box start their tour with an event this weekend at Wild About Books in Clearlake, Calif. Each of the four tour boxes contains the two plush

figures, toys relating to the characters (including a dog bowl), suggested activities, recipes, stickers and signage.

Roaring Brook has stores and libraries booked through June, but interested bookstores can still sign on to host a Dog and Bear event by emailing freelancer Susan Hecht, formerly associate director of retail marketing at Roaring Brook, who is managing the tour. A third Dog and Bear adventure, Dog and Bear: Three to Get Ready, is scheduled for September publication.

Occasionally publishers send us ARCs (advance readers copies) of books before they are actually released.  This is great because it gives us the opportunity to preview what would work for our customers and bookstore.  From time to time we get to return the favor and share an ARC with customers and we use your feedback when placing orders for new books.  Here is the response to just such an exchange:  And let me say, we are always grateful for your feedback!

Father of the Rain by Lily King   Prize-winning author Lily King’s masterful new novel spans three decades of a volatile relationship between a charismatic, alcoholic father and the daughter who loves him.

Debra zoomed into the bookstore the other afternoon all goosepimply from reading this advanced reader copy that we shared with her.  While she still had about 30 pages to go, here are a few of her comments:  "...so clearly gave me a view of divorce from a kid's point of view without coming off as preachy!" ... " I am so captivated by this young girl's relationship with her parents..."  ..."It is if I have been living in a castle and came upon a window I had never looked out of!"

Thank you Debra!  We placed an order right away for copies of "Father of the Rain"

Product While the Clock TickedI really enjoyed reading While The Clock Ticked. It is the 11th Hardy Boy book. This book is about two young detectives, Frank and Joe Hardy. This time their mission is to find out who is sending death threats to Mr.Dalrymple, who is a banker and the owner of the old run down Purdy place. The boys also get caught up with some harbor thieves. Will the Hardy Boys stop the death threats and the harbor thieves? Read the book to find out!!! I would suggest young readers who like a good mystery to read this book. Out of 10, I give this book a rating of 7.

Product Hot Hand       I really enjoyed reading Hot Hand, which is part of Mike Lupica's comeback kids series. This book is about a boy named Billy and his parents who are going through a separation. Not only does Billy have to worry about his parents, he also has to deal with his basketball team which is coached by his dad. Billy really wants to help his team "the Magic" win the championship. His dad wants him to pass the ball, but Billy was born to be a shooter. Will the Magic win the championship? Will Billy's parents get back together? Read to find out. I would advise young readers to read this book. Out of 10, I give this book a rating of 7.5.

I had a good time reading the Big Field. It was a book by Mike Lupica. It was a very good baseball/sports book. It is about a kid that plays for a team in Florida. His name is Keith but his nickname is Hutch. He has played shortstop all his life but now he plays 2nd base. That is because another shortstop is one of the best prospects in baseball. He and Hutch don’t get along that well. I will not tell you his name so you have to read the book. But the important part is they are trying to make it and win the Florida state championship. If I give this book a rating from 1 to 10 I would give it an 8 ½. It is a good book and I encourage young and old to read not only this book but all of Mike Lupica’s sports books.

"The Melted Coins" in the Hardy Boys Series

I just got done reading The Melted Coins in the Hardy Boys series. It is the
23rd book in the series. In this book the boys go on an adventure to get back
some stolen Indian mask. They go on a adventure to Cleveland to check out a
college for a friend named Chet. On the way to Cleveland something happens and
they meet a couple . From there it gets very exciting. They all have to save
a very important mask called the melted coins. They also get into a fight or
two. They make some new friends and some new foes like they always do in their
adventure/Mystery books. So if I give this book a rating from 1 to 10 I give it
a 7. It is a very good book. I would like to see other people reading this
series and the other Hardy Boy series.
This book is $6.99 in hardcover

Due out in Paperback December 1st 2009 for $14.99 it is highly recommended by Customer Amy Armeni; here's what Amy has to say:

I read SAVING CICADAS by Nicole Seitz.  I really liked the book.  It was engaging, and I found myself anxious to figure out the secrets of the family in this book.  It is very surprising and even when I thought I’d “gotten it,” there was still another twist at the end.  I’d love to say more, but I don’t want to give away the ending.

I highly recommend this book. Thanks. Amy Armeni

Betts Gatewood book review PDF Print E-mail

The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny (Armand Gamache Series #5) Hardcover, $24.95

Here is what customer Betts Gatewood has to say about this new release...

"I enjoyed this mystery very much. I found Inspector Gamache very endearing, as well as intelligent and funny at times. He quietly and competently led his team of detectives through an interesting case, leaving the reader wondering until the very end who the killer was.  The setting of Quebec, Canada added an interesting twist and I enjoyed learning about some of the myths and legends of the Canadian natives.  I also liked the fact that even though a murder took place the author did not need to divulge all the gory details of the event.  Sometimes mysteries get lost in the blood and gore of the crime instead of sticking to solving the case. I would gladly read another Louise Penny novel! "
